Vickie Lakes-Battle, executive director for IFF’s Chicago Metro region, and Dr. Jeffreen Hayes, executive director of Threewalls, recently discussed Chicago’s Cultural Treasures as a means of preserving cultural heritage with Dr. Frances Richards for her Black Entrepreneur Experience podcast.
“The economic value of the arts and the artists, and their contributions, cannot be overstated,” said Lakes-Battle. “In urban areas in particular, artists are culture keepers, culture bearers — the preservation of heritage and legacy as we really think about this melting pot called the USA.”
“Artists and the arts are deeply important in our society, particularly in our communities,” said Hayes. “To Vickie’s point, in urban areas artists are using their artistic practices and their creative skills to reimagine, reinvigorate many of our communities, as well as creating art and art spaces that are engaging in the legacy of art and culture that already exist within these communities.”
